Getting the Most out of a Home and Garden

Tips For Beautiful Flowers in the Garden At All Times

Flowers add beauty to your garden and the areas around your house. There are many types of flowers that you can go for in a home garden. They include daffodils, calla lilies, azaleas and chamomiles. Just like the other plants and trees in the garden, flowers need a lot of care for them to blossom, stay healthy and keep looking beautiful at all times. You should have a regular schedule for you to keep the flowers in your garden healthy. Here are a few ways to do it:

Deadhead Your Flowers

When flowers start to droop and wilt, it could be due to old age, a disease infection or infestation by pests.  In such cases, you should remove the dying, crumpled flowers that ruin the look of the garden. This is called deadheading. By getting rid of the dead flowers, you leave the healthy and colourful ones that work well to spice up the look in the garden. If the dead flowers were infested by pests or a disease, deadheading helps you to keep the pests or disease from spreading to the other healthy ones.

Mulch Your Flowers

You don't need to be a florist to know that flowers require regular watering to stay healthy especially during the dry season. If you have limited time to water them manually, you need a good plan that enables the garden soil to retain the available water and keep the flowers hydrated for a long period. Mulching is a reliable way to do this. It regulates the temperature of the soil, slowing down the rate at which water evaporates from the soil. You can go for different types of mulches such as grass clippings, pebbles, woodchips and sawdust. When mulching, you should preferably go for the organic alternatives such as grass clippings. As the organic mulch ages, it decomposes and adds nutrients to the soil, which are in turn absorbed by your flowers.

Keep Pets Off

Some pets have a habit of digging their snout and paws into the soil. They can disrupt the tender soil structure and expose the roots of the flowering plants. This can make the flowers wither and die because they are not rooted well in the soil. Therefore, you should keep the pets away from your flower gardens using small fences or have dig pits set aside for the pets. Here, you let them into the confined dig pits so that they can still enjoy their digging away from your nourished flowers.
